Wrocław Dwarf Route

A 6-stop plan for Wrocław's 300+ krasnale (bronze dwarves) — the largest permanent outdoor art installation in Poland. The krasnale started in 2005 as a single anti-communist sculpture by artist Tomasz Moczulski; the Orange Alternative movement has since added 300+ across the city. Plan a route that hits the 12–15 most popular, in the order that minimises walking.

The 12 most popular krasnale

Hardcoded, with locations. The official Wrocław map has 300+, but these are the ones every guide and tour hits first:

1. Wrocław Główny station dwarf

In the main hall, near the ticket office. Hard to miss — first thing you see when you arrive. Holding a tiny train.

2. Rynek dwarf (with coin)

On the Old Town square, north side, near the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall). The classic photo spot.

3. Wyspa Słodowa dwarf

On Słodowa Island (between Old Town and Ostrów Tumski). Picnic bench dwarf — sits on a tiny bench.

4. Cathedral dwarf (Ostrów Tumski)

On Cathedral Island, near the Wrocław Cathedral entrance. A "krasnal przy katedrze" with a tiny cross.

5. Świdnicka dwarf (with pasta fork)

On Świdnicka street, near the bridge over the Odra. Holds a tiny fork — a nod to the Italian restaurants on the street.

6. Plac Solny dwarf (salt-dwarf)

Plac Solny, on the flower market side. Holds a tiny salt shaker — nod to the historic salt trade that built the city.

7. Iglica dwarf

Near the Iglica (the 1970s concrete spike monument from the PRL era). Dwarf wears a hard hat — Orange Alternative satire.

8. Hala Targowa dwarf (with food)

At the Hala Targowa (Market Hall) entrance. Dwarf holds a tiny vegetable — market trader.

9. Plac Nowy Targ dwarf

On the smaller New Market square, near the University. Bespectacled, holding a book.

10. Most Piaskowy dwarf

On the Sand Bridge (Most Piaskowy) between Old Town and Ostrów Tumski. Fishing dwarf with tiny rod.

11. Ossolineum dwarf

Outside the Ossolineum National Institute. Dwarf holds a tiny book — reference to the library.

12. Krasnal Pracz (washer dwarf)

Near the river, by the Tumski Bridge. Washes tiny clothes in a tiny bucket.

The Orange Alternative story (why dwarves?)

The first krasnal appeared in 2005 as a graffiti-style sculpture by Tomasz Moczulski, painted in the city's anti-communist Orange Alternative colours (orange dwarf). It was a protest against the 1980s censorship of the city's graffiti culture under martial law. The municipal authorities initially removed it; the public demanded it back; eventually the city adopted the dwarfs as a tourist attraction.

By 2026, the city itself commissions krasnale — 300+ are scattered across Wrocław. Each is a small bronze figure (~30 cm tall), often themed to the location (with a tiny version of whatever the place is known for). They sit on benches, climb drainpipes, hold miniatures of nearby objects.

The Orange Alternative is also remembered for the "happenings" of the 1980s — groups of people dressing up as dwarfs in orange hats to mock communist censorship. Wrocław has a permanent exhibition about this at the Ostrów Tumski cultural centre. A statue of "Papa Krasnal" (the Orange Alternative mascot) is at the riverside.

FAQ

How long does the full route take?

The full 300+ route is a 2-day project. Most visitors do 6–12 krasnale in 2–3 hours. The official "Dwarf Route" brochure from the Wrocław tourist info covers 50 in a half-day walk.

Can I see all 12 in one walk?

Yes — 2.5 km, ~2 hours at relaxed pace, kid-friendly. The route above is designed to minimise backtracking. With the half-day version you can hit 20+, but it's harder to keep kids engaged.

Are there any "fake" dwarves I should avoid?

A handful of souvenir-shop copies exist but they're clearly plastic. The official krasnale are bronze, ~30 cm, on small concrete or stone bases. There's a registry at the Wrocław Tourism Board if you want to verify.

Is there an official app?

Yes — the "Krasnale" app (free, iOS + Android, in English). It maps all 300+, has the stories behind each, and works offline. The official Wrocław Tourism Board recommends it.
