Your trip
Six inputs that decide which city is actually your home base.
Result
A specific base + suggested itinerary.
Base city
Kraków
Best for: history, food, Auschwitz/Wieliczka day-trips, Tatra access. Old town is walkable, food is the best in Poland, day-trip options are unmatched.
5-day: Day 1 Old Town, Day 2 Auschwitz, Day 3 Wieliczka, Day 4 Tatra (Zakopane), Day 5 Kazimierz + departure
Hotel ~450 zł/night mid-range + ~150 zł/day other
Alternative
Warsaw (if business or modernist architecture)
Why not the others
Gdańsk is coastal, but 5 days is too much for just the coast
Prices are 2026 reference values from major OTAs and Polish hotel chains. Always re-check before booking.
How to read the result
Kraków, Warsaw, and Gdańsk are not interchangeable. Each is the right answer for a different trip profile, and the wrong answer for others. The "split your time 50/50" advice that tourists get from online summaries ignores that the three cities are 4–6 hours apart by train and have completely different vibes.
Kraków (population ~800,000)
The old royal capital, ~70% of Polish tourism flows through here. Old Town + Wawel + Kazimierz Jewish quarter is the centre. Day-trip options: Auschwitz (1h, mandatory day), Wieliczka Salt Mine (30 min, half-day), Tatras/Zakopane (2h, full day). The food scene is the best in Poland. The air quality is the worst in Poland (smog in winter).
Warsaw (population ~1.8M)
The modern capital, rebuilt from rubble after WWII. Old Town is a meticulous reconstruction (UNESCO listed). Modernist Warsaw (Muranów, MDM, Praga district) is what most travellers actually want to see. Day-trip options: Masuria (2.5h, full day), Łódź (1.5h), Treblinka (1h). Business + museums + Chopin + modernist architecture is the profile.
Gdańsk (population ~470,000)
The Baltic coast city, Hanseatic merchant tradition. Old Town (Główne Miasto) is smaller, more intimate than Kraków. Day-trip options: Malbork Castle (1h, largest brick castle in Europe), Hel Peninsula (1.5h, beach + WWII fortifications), Sopot (15 min, beach resort). Solidarity + WWII + amber trade history. The right answer for beach + coast.
When NOT to base in Kraków
If your focus is purely business (Warsaw), purely modernist architecture (Warsaw), purely the Baltic coast (Gdańsk), or a 10-day grand tour (split 4+3+3). Also: in winter, Kraków's air quality can hit 110 µg/m³ PM2.5 on bad days — asthma sufferers should consider Warsaw or Gdańsk instead.

FAQ
Can I base in Kraków and visit Auschwitz on a day trip?
Yes — Auschwitz-Birkenau is in Oświęcim, ~65 km west of Kraków. Bus (1h, ~15 zł) or train (1.5h, ~12 zł) runs every hour. The museum visit is 3–4 hours plus travel. Book the official tour at auschwitz.org weeks ahead in summer — they cap daily visitors. Free entry but mandatory guided tour (~50 zł).
Is Warsaw safe?
Yes, by European standards. Standard urban precautions at night (avoid empty underpasses, watch for pickpockets at Centralna station). The "Eastern European" reputation is outdated — Warsaw is statistically one of the safer EU capitals. The main petty-crime zone is the Nożyków park area and the Old Town after midnight on Friday/Saturday.
What is the cheapest month to visit?
January–February (excluding school holidays) and late October–November. Hotel prices drop 40–50% vs peak. Air quality is the trade-off — Kraków in January can hit 110 µg/m³ PM2.5 on bad days (WHO target is 5). Consider Gdańsk for a winter city break — coastal air is cleaner.
Do I need to book Auschwitz far ahead?
Yes. auschwitz.org opens bookings ~3 months ahead. Summer slots (Jun–Aug) sell out 4–6 weeks ahead. Winter is easier. If you can't get the official tour, commercial operators run bus+guide packages from Kraków (~150 zł) — these include entry and a guide.
