e-TOLL Motorway Calculator — A1 / A2 / A4 + rental-car viaBOX

Poland doesn't sell paper vignettes anymore. The state-run e-TOLL system tracks your motorway use through an app, a ZSL box, or a viaBOX rented from the car-rental desk. Pick the wrong one and you get a 500 zł fine. Pick none and you get a 500 zł fine and a 500 zł administrative fee.

How to read the result

Polish motorway tolls are split into segments, and each segment is charged by distance class. Here's the breakdown of the corridors you'll likely use:

A2 Konin–Stryków (~ 99 km)

The Warsaw↔Łódź toll road. ~0.20 zł/km for a passenger car = ~ 20 zł one-way / ~ 40 zł round-trip. Add the Stryków→Warsaw segment (free, no toll) and Łódź→Konin (free) for the full corridor. The Konin→Stryków segment is the only toll section on A2 in 2026.

A4 Wrocław–Sośnica (~ 88 km)

The Kraków↔Katowice corridor actually has a different operator; A4 Sośnica→Wrocław is the western segment. ~0.22 zł/km passenger car = ~ 20 zł one-way / ~ 40 zł round-trip. The Sośnica→Gliwice junction is the eastern cap.

A1 Gdańsk–Toruń (~ 140 km)

Gdańsk→Łódź via Toruń. The tolled segment is Gdańsk (Rusocin) → Toruń (Nowe Marzy). ~0.20 zł/km = ~ 28 zł one-way / ~ 56 zł round-trip. The Toruń→Łódź section is free.

A4 Kraków–Katowice (~ 65 km)

The shortest segment but heavily used. ~0.20 zł/km = ~ 13 zł one-way / ~ 26 zł round-trip. Toll plaza at Balice near Kraków Airport.

e-TOLL pre-pay vs post-pay

Pre-pay means you buy a credit balance in the e-TOLL PLI app, and tolls deduct automatically. Post-pay means you link the app to a Polish bank account and pay at the end of the billing cycle. Pre-pay is open to everyone (foreign-registration included). Post-pay is only for PL-registered vehicles with a Polish bank.

Rental-car viaBOX with EU type-D

If you rent in Poland, the rental company fits a viaBOX (type-D, European standard) in the car. You pay a daily admin fee (~ 10-12 zł) plus ~ 0.20 zł/km. The viaBOX works across PL/CZ/SK/HU/SI toll networks. Most Polish rental desks charge this fee directly to the credit card on file.

Foreign-registration "pre-pay required" trap

Non-EU vehicles (US, UK, Canada, AU) cannot post-pay. They must pre-pay via the e-TOLL app before entering a toll segment. If you miss it, the gate camera catches you, and the fine arrives 2-4 weeks later by post.

Penalty = 500 zł + 500 zł

Driving without a valid e-TOLL registration carries a 500 zł fine per segment plus a 500 zł administrative fee. Round-trip on three segments = 1500 zł + 500 zł admin if you forgot to register. The fine is enforceable across EU borders.

FAQ

Can I just pay cash at the toll plaza?

No. As of 2021, Polish motorways replaced cash toll booths with the e-TOLL system. Cash lanes don't exist on the tolled segments. The e-TOLL app, a ZSL box, or a viaBOX are the only legal options.

What happens if my e-TOLL app crashes mid-trip?

You'll be detected by the gate system as "no registration". Fix the app, re-register, pay the missed segments as soon as possible, and accept that a penalty may follow. The 14-day voluntary payment window usually drops the fine from 500 to 200 zł per segment.

Do I need e-TOLL on the Krakow → Zakopane road?

No. Zakopianka (DK7) is a national road, not a toll motorway. No e-TOLL required. The same applies to most national DK roads. Only the A-class motorway segments listed above carry a toll in 2026.

Is the viaBOX worth it for a 1-day trip?

Almost never. The admin fee alone is ~ 12 zł. For a single A2 segment, the e-TOLL app pre-pay of ~ 20 zł is cheaper. viaBOX only pays off if you're driving 100+ km/day across multiple segments, or if you're renting for a week.
