Polish VAT Refund Calculator — Tax-Free Shopping

Non-EU tourists can get Polish VAT back on purchases above 200 zł from a registered Tax-Free shop, after customs verification at the airport. The headline 23% is what the shop charges. The refund you actually receive is ~ 17-19%, because the operator takes 10-15% and the merchant sometimes adds its own deduction. Pick by category, receipt size, and airport verification queue.

How to read the result

Polish VAT for tourists is split into three bands. Each band has its own refund math:

23% VAT (standard)

Clothing, electronics, jewellery, watches, kitchen goods, art, perfumes. The headline VAT. With Global Blue 13% deduction, effective refund rate is ~ 17% on a 23% tax. On 800 zł spend, that's ~ 132 zł cash back.

8% VAT (reduced)

Restaurant meals, takeaway food, hotels, taxi, intercity transport, public transport tickets, books in some categories, fitness clubs. Reduced band — usually less profitable to refund because the absolute amount is smaller.

5% VAT (lowest)

Books (most categories), some pharma, agricultural produce, baby goods. Often 0% effective refund after deduction. Skip the queue.

Minimum 200 zł single receipt

Polish Tax-Free applies only when a single invoice / receipt is ≥ 200 zł (gross) for 23% goods. Lower thresholds for 8% (50 zł) and 5% (50 zł). Multi-receipt stacking doesn't qualify — must be one receipt.

"1 stop" vs "2 stop" refund

1 stop = VAT-refund desk at the airport, full refund at once. 2 stop = verify at customs, then either (a) get refund in cash at airport tax-deferred counter, or (b) mail the form to the operator for bank refund. The 1-stop is faster but operators take more.

Global Blue / Planet / Tax Refund

Three main operators in Poland. Global Blue dominates — at most major Tax-Free shops. Planet (formerly Premier Tax Free) is the runner-up. Tax Refund (parent: Italy's Planet) has the best mall coverage. Each deducts 10-15% as commission.

Non-EU passport only

Polish Tax-Free applies to non-EU passport holders. UK passport holders qualify (UK is post-Brexit non-EU). EU passport holders do NOT qualify. EU residence permit holders of non-EU citizenship may qualify — check Tax-Free shop.

EU-internal-purchase trap

The shop might tell you the item is "EU priced" and not tax-free. Big-box electronics (Media Expert, x-kom, RTV Eurocom) often exclude EU passport holders from Tax-Free. Don't trust — ask for the form (Form VAT-REF).

10-15% operator deduction

Global Blue 13% default. Planet 12%. Tax Refund 14%. Varies by category — luxury watches / jewellery may be lower, mass-market may be higher. The deduction is the operator's commission for processing the refund.

Stamps & signatures required

You need (1) shop's Tax-Free form (Form VAT-REF), (2) customs officer's stamp at the airport customs office (before security check, before the gate), (3) operator's stamp at the operator's desk (after customs). With the 3 stamps, refund is finalised.

Modlin / non-airport departure

Modlin Airport has no Tax-Free office in 2026. Use the formal "customs office at first EU exit airport" procedure — fly Chopin, KRK, or any EU hub. Don't expect a refund at Modlin.

FAQ

Do UK passport holders qualify?

Yes, fully. Post-Brexit, UK is non-EU. UK passport holders qualify for Tax-Free. EU / EEA residents (incl. UK) of non-EU citizenship may also qualify if they have a non-EU passport.

Can I refund restaurant bills?

In theory, yes, if the restaurant is VAT-registered for the 8% band and you have a Tax-Free form. In practice, very few Polish restaurants participate. Most restaurant bills are below the 200 zł threshold, and the 8% band is rarely refundable. Skip.

What happens if I forget to get the customs stamp?

No refund. The customs stamp is the proof the goods actually left the EU. Without it, the operator won't pay. Mail the form with the missing stamp to Global Blue / Planet and they may re-process at the destination country if you can get the destination customs to stamp it.

Is there a 3-month expiry on the form?

Yes. The Tax-Free form must be presented at customs within 3 months of the purchase. After 3 months, the form is void. Plan your purchases inside this window.
