How to read the result
Polish camping law (Ustawa o lasach, art. 30 + BdPN regulamin) is not as permissive as Norway or Scotland, but Bieszczady is the one Polish region where wild camping is tolerated within limits. The 2026 BdPN access rules draw three concentric zones:
Strict reserve zone (Ścisły rezerwat)
No camping, no fire, no hammock on trees, no off-trail. Tarnica summit area is the famous exception: ~50m around the summit is free for tent pitching (it's outside the strict reserve), an artifact of the 1971 reserve redesign.
Protected zone (200m from trail)
BdPN tolerates one-night camping for hikers in transit, max 2 consecutive nights at the same spot. Hammock on trees is contested — BdPN guards have fined for it. No open fire. Gas canister stoves OK. Carrying ID is required (the Park Straż does spot-checks on weekends).
Outside the park
Bieszczady forest (Nadleśnictwo Lesko, Nadleśnictwo Baligród) follows general forest law. Camping 200m from a marked trail is fine. Open fire requires landowner permission — most often obtained via the local Nadleśnictwo office. The Bieszczadzka Kwatera Myśliwska (forest-hunting lodge, ~80 zł/night per room) is the practical base.
Designated BnO shelters
There are 6 PTTK shelters in the massif — Chatka Puchatka (Połonina Wetlińska, 1,228 m, the highest), Schronisko pod Tarnicą (in the valley), Schronisko w Ustrzykach Górnych, Schronisko "Koliba" (Caryńska), Schronisko w Wołosatem, and the historic Schronisko "Baza" near Tarnica. Prices range 50–80 zł/night bunk, 200–350 zł private room.
Route-by-route reality
Połonina Wetlińska. Most visited poonina (mountain pasture). Chatka Puchatka shelter at the top, a 4.5h hike from Wetlina via the green trail. Camping below the ridge, in the upper Bereźnica stream valley, is widely tolerated in summer — BdPN guards do not actively patrol it. Watch for sudden fog — the "Bieszczady mist" rolls in within 10 minutes.
Połonina Caryńska. Slightly less crowded than Wetlińska, similar rules. The Caryńska meadow plateau (above 1,200 m) is in the strict reserve — no camping there. Pitch in the tree-line below, on the Bereźnica side.
Tarnica. The summit (1,346 m) is OUTSIDE the strict reserve by ~50m. This loophole is used by ~50 tents on summer weekends. Free, legal, but cold and exposed — the night temperature drops to 5°C even in July. The "Baza" shelter at the parking lot (Biały Krzyż / Pszczeliny) is the practical base at 60–80 zł/night bunk.
Tarnica → Krzemień ridge. The classic ridge traverse. Free zone around Tarnica summit only; the rest of the ridge is strict reserve. Hammock on the ridge is illegal (BdPN has fined for it). The "Bieszczady horse trail" (Szlak Konny Bieszczadzki) crosses the eastern flank of the ridge and is the legal horse-camping corridor — multi-day horse trekking with overnight at stables (Olszyna, Kalnica) is well organised.
Solinka valley. Strict reserve. No camping, no entry without permit. Most remote and most strictly policed area in the park. The "Bieszczady wilderness" reputation lives here.
Połonina Wołoszatka. The least visited poonina. The refuge site "Tarnica Niżna" / "Schronisko w Wołosatem" (~30 zł/night in the hostel, ~80 zł in a private room) is the base. From there, camping in the upper Wołosat stream valley is tolerated. The summit (1,071 m) is below tree line and forested — less spectacular than Wetlińska but more sheltered.
Vehicle + access math
The Bieszczady road network is famously bad — a feature, not a bug. Most forest roads are unsurfaced and become mud after rain. A 2WD car will reach the main trailheads (Pszczeliny, Ustrzyki Górne, Wołosate, Bereźnica) without issue. The deeper valleys (Solinka, upper San) require a 4x4, especially in shoulder season. Carrying recovery gear (shovel, traction boards) is a Bieszczady tradition.
Parking at trailheads: 20–30 zł/day at the most visited (Tarnica / Biały Krzyż, Pszczeliny), free at smaller ones. Parking at the Kwatera Myśliwska is included in the room rate (~80 zł/night). Reaching the Kwatera Myśliwska: 4WD strongly preferred — the last 3 km of forest road is steep gravel.
Public transport: PKS buses run from Sanok to Ustrzyki Górne and Solinka several times a day. The Bieszczadzka Kolejka Wąskotorowa (narrow-gauge heritage railway) connects Majdan with Przysłup. Schedule is published in summer only.

FAQ
Can I hang a hammock in BdPN?
Contested. The park regulation prohibits damage to trees, and BdPN has fined hammock users 200–500 zł. The legal workaround is to use a freestanding hammock frame (no trees). Practical: in the protected zone outside the strict reserve, single-tree hammocks with wide straps (≥5 cm, bark-protecting) are usually tolerated if no bark damage occurs. In the strict reserve, no.
Is the Tarnica summit really free to camp?
Yes, the ~50m summit area is outside the strict reserve. Free, legal, but crowded on summer weekends — arrive Friday afternoon for a Saturday-morning sunrise. The summit is exposed: bring a windscreen and a 3-season tent.
What is the Bieszczadzka Kwatera Myśliwska?
A forest-hunting lodge in the upper San valley, run by the local hunting association (Koło Łowieckie). 6 rooms, ~80 zł/night per room (sleeps 2–3), full board available (~120 zł/person/day with dinner + breakfast). Wild boar stew (dziczyzna) on the menu in autumn. Accessible by 4WD only — last 3 km is forest gravel.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, on a leash in the protected zone. Off-leash only outside the park, in the forest district. BdPN guards have fined for off-leash dogs chasing sheep on the poloniny. Practical: keep the dog leashed everywhere except the actual forest roads.
